Book Review

THE DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL

                                                                                  -ANNE FRANK

The Diary of a Young Girl’ is a diary written by Anne Frank. It was written during World War ll, when the Nazis got hold of the Netherlands. At that time due to the atrocious policies of the Nazis against Jews, the Jews were forced either to flee the country or to go into hiding. Being Jewish, Anne Frank and her family went into hiding. Anne Frank got a diary as a present for her thirteenth birthday in which she confided her genuine thoughts, emotions, feelings and firsthand experience of living in hiding.

WRITING STYLE

As the Diary was originally written in Dutch, I read the edition in which it was translated to English. Hence, I cannot say for sure that the writing style was not hindered during the translation. But, according to my interpretation about the content, I can say that the author was completely truthful about her feelings that she confided in the diary. The writing can be found a bit repetitive, but at the same time we need to understand that it was a diary and not a fantasy or imaginative narrative. In the diary, the author had articulately expressed herself and had noted down all the accurate details that she observed during the time she was in hiding.

(STORY) TIMELINE

Anne Frank got her diary on her thirteenth birthday, a few days before they went into hiding. At that time, the Netherlands had fallen in the hands of the Nazi Government. The Nazis had gradually begun to incorporate their Anti-Jewish policies in the Netherlands. Before it was too late, the author and her family went into hiding in her father’s (Otto Frank’s) office. The place of hiding is referred to as ‘Secret Annex’ by the author. She has described the structure of the Secret Annex. Before they went into hiding, the Author wrote about her friends, school and her social circle. In the hiding she often missed her friends and also thought that she had deserted them to their fate in the Nazi Rule. Further, the hiding played host to another family (van Pels), and later on a Dentist, Albert Dussel (Fritz Pfeffer). So there were in total 8 people in the Secret Annex. The author had mentioned the changes in relationship within all the members. This included affection, strained conditions, despair and even distaste within the group. The Author, time and again, confided all her thoughts and feelings about all members in the Annex as well as about their helpers in her diary. Anne had noted the world politics going on at that time which would have decided their fate. The author wrote that despite the uncertainty and constant fear of being caught, she had become strong and confident and had retrospected her actions by exploring herself. The members of the Annex were arrested on 4th August 1944. After the war, out of the eight members of the Annex only Anne’s Father (Otto Frank) survived. Anne Frank died in Bergen Belsen concentration camp probably of typhus.

MY THOUGHTS

This book is not just a book, but it is actually a perspective towards life. It inspires us to look at the positives and continue to live our lives in spite of the problems faced. Even after nearly 80 years of the diary being written, it stands relevant to our struggle with the unreliability of time. We are generally afraid of the uncertainty, but if we compare it to that of the Author’s, our problems seem to be trivial.  At the end of the book, you cannot help thinking that Anne’s death was indeed unfortunate. Nevertheless, her diary will always keep her alive.

ASHWATTHAMA: THE CURSED IMMORTAL

Ashwatthama, or Droni was the son of Guru Dronacharya, the Royal teacher of the princes of Hastinapur, and Kripi, the sister of Kripacharya, the famed Rishi. It was said that Dronacharya had performed a severe penance, to appease Lord Shiva, to gain the boon of the Lord, to have a son, powerful enough, to even conquer Death itself. According to a legend, Ashwatthama was born, with a powerful gem named the Chintamani, embedded in the middle of his brow, which gave him power to overcome hunger, thirst and fatigue and also helped him to heal his injuries much faster. This made Ashwatthama a being superior to all other living beings, including the humans.

After finishing teaching the Princes of Hastinapur, as a Guru Dakshina, Dronacharya asked for the defeat and humiliation of the king of Panchal, Drupad as a revenge for Dronacharya’s indignity by Drupad. Very few know that after this defeat, Ashwatthama was crowned the king of half the kingdom of Panchal, while Dhrupad retained half of it. Ashwatthama was one of the strongest warriors, who had the knowledge of the legendary weapons like the Brahmastra, and the Narayan Astra.

Ashwatthama was a close friend of Duryodhana, the eldest of the Kauravas, and was very fond of him. He also shared a strong bond with Duryodhana’s brothers, and also with Duryodhana’s friends like Karna and Jayadratha. As Drona’s son, he expected all of Drona’s knowledge to be taught to him, and to receive all the weapons, which his father possessed. Unfortunately, Arjuna was the one, to receive all the knowledge, and that turned Ashwatthama against Arjuna, thus helping Duryodhana in many ways. A lesser-known fact of Ashwatthama, is that he was the only person, in the entire Sabha, to go against the disrobing of Draupadi, while even her husbands stood there, doing nothing, with their heads hanging down in shame.

When Duryodhana was fatally wounded on the  17th day of the Kurukshetra war, he appointed Ashwatthama as the commander in chief for the 18th day. After which, he took their severed heads, to a dying Duryodhana. Duryodhana asked for Bhima’s head, so that he could crush it with his bare hands. Ashwatthama gave him the head resembling Bhima, and Duryodhana squashed it like a pumpkin. This is where, Duryodhana realised, that the heads were not those of his brothers, but of his nephews. Though Duryodhana hated the Pandavas, his favourite nephew was his enemy’s son. This made Duryodhana curse Ashwatthama with unhappiness, just before breathing his last. When the devastated Pandavas finally found Ashwatthama, Ashwatthama aimed the Brahmastra at the brothers. Without a choice, Arjuna was also forced to do the same, as it was the only way to retaliate to this weapon. Lord Krishna requested both the warriors to draw back their weapons, as their collision would lead to great destruction. For the better, Arjuna did what he was told. Ashwatthama, however, did not. When asked upon, he answered saying that he did not know how to draw back the weapon. He, therefore, changed its direction, to Uttara, Abhimanyu’s wife, who was in labour at that time, and killed her yet to be born baby. This caused Krishna to rip apart Ashwatthama’s Chintamani, and to curse him with immortality. Ashwatthama is said to suffer immense pain, torture, which will have no remedy, yet stay alive, till the end of the Kali Yuga.

This was the story of a warrior, who was punished beyond any limits, as he did the demonic crime of killing an unborn child. We learn that even if one leads a virtuous life, but does a heinous crime, he is no different than a person, who has lived an unvirtuous life.

TILL THE END OF TIME

Am I living in a colourful world with a grey mind?

A question I seem to ask myself till the end of time.

Oh, I shouldn't pass this chance

 the night still young and I glance;

at my past with embarrassment and my future of controlled experiment.

Am I just becoming with all these predicaments a mime?

A question I seem to ask myself till the end of time.

 Berating thoughts polluting my mind,

with remarks and a rule book undefined.

"The world has so much to offer" I hear in paradigm,

I seem to be always questioning myself till the end of time.

Acting like I have all things in control,

Trying to maintain the 'perfect picture' facade.

Wondering when I will break out of this theatrical role,

If god knows how to please give me the code.

Desperate to catch each opportunity as it comes,

Trying to do it all when I am still young and prime.

But the question still crawls back and the reward numbs,

Am I really going to be a grey mind till the end of time?

CAN IPL 2022 SEE 5 OVERSEAS PLAYERS INSTEAD OF THE NORMAL 4?

The IPL 2022 is supposed to be played with ten teams, with 2 new franchises adding to the current 8-franchise setup. The inclusion of two more teams, meaning that there has to be a complete revamp of the current system. This directly hints at a mega auction, which is going to be conducted with most of the players in the auction pool, with reduced player retention capacity for the teams. Two more teams meaning that 110 players will be continuously playing in the league. That is a big number, compared to the 88, who were playing in 2021.

While the addition of these 22 players may bring loads of opportunities for the Indian youngsters who want to perform on the big stage, there are some issues too that come free of cost with these additions. Some Cricket Pundits believe that, that the BCCI would have to remove the compulsions that they have imposed on the teams regarding the team composition. Cricket Pundits feel that instead of the contemporary team composition of 7 Indian and 4 overseas players, the BCCI should allow the teams to play with 6 Indian and 5 overseas players. The reason behind this is quite rational. If the BCCI continues with the composition of 7 Indian and 4 overseas players, then the IPL will need at least 70 quality Indian players, who are used to playing at the big stage like the IPL. That’s just not possible. The main problem is that the cream of the quality domestic players is already a part of the IPL, and there are not more enough players. Also, recent performers like Shahrukh Khan, Mohammed Azharudeen, in the domestic T20 league have also been awarded places in IPL teams. That means most of the budding talent has also been occupied. Players who need more grooming in domestic circuits cannot be directly put into the IPL and expected to perform well. And all this collectively, can increase the particular team’s problems and also may deplete the quality of the competition in the IPL. To counter these problems, the ‘6 Indian and 5 overseas players’ combination should be adopted. There are some fascinating overseas players that the franchises have, but aren’t able to use them due to 4 overseas player restriction. If the 5 overseas player team composition is adopted, the overseas players who only warm the bench in the regular IPL, would get chances too to perform, hence uplifting the standard of the competition in the IPL.

In the IPL with 8 teams, total 88 players play in the XIs, out of which, 32 are overseas, and 56 are Indian, the percentage of Indian players is around 63%. In the IPL with 10 teams, total 110 players will play in the XIs, with 60 Indian and 50 overseas players, the percentage of Indian players still being 54%. To this, one can argue that the opportunities for young players may be diminished, which is just as valid. Still 60 Indian Players is a big slot to fill. The BCCI is yet to take a decision. What do you think should be done? Go with the 7 Indian- 4 overseas or 6 Indian- 5 overseas. Do comment!

LA LIGA & LIGUE ONE TITLE CHASE DOWN TO WIRE AS REAL & PSG WIN TO KEEP TITLE HOPES ALIVE

It was 90 minutes of thrill and excitement as major European domestic leagues approach to the end of the season. With Manchester City, Bayern Munich & Inter Milan already clinching domestic titles, the stage is set for a nerve-racking end to the season in Spain & France.

Luis Suarez scored a dramatic late winner to complete Atletico’s comeback against Osasuna and put themselves on the verge of title for the first time in the last seven years. Osasuna taking lead just 15 minutes before the final whistle cited fears for Atletico of a defeat which would not just have postponed their bid to seal the title, but would have placed Real above Atletico with one game to go. Renan Lodi had restored parity but Real who went on to defeat Athletic Bilbao were in pole position to win the title with two minutes remaining. However, a late winner has kept Atletico’s fate in their own hands, meaning a win would crown them champions regardless of the result of Real’s tie with Villarreal.

While the penultimate round of games in Ligue 1 lacked such dramatic and thrilling action, it has still paved the way for what could be ‘the best ever final day of the season’ in French football recently. It has been a decade in French football without any last day title races characterized by PSG domination. Lille could create history by overthrowing PSG despite their Total Club Value being just 10 times less than PSG’s Single signing: Neymar JR. that’s a ridiculous fact, no doubt. Monaco were the only successful challengers against PSG in recent seasons and a win next week for Lille could mean that they become only the second club to do so. Lille on one hand have been bidding for winning their first title in last 10 years. A win against 12th placed Angers could mean Lille pulling off a stupendous feat anticipated by none.
