Quote Of The Day

Today is a special day for us 'thinkers', as we have completed one whole month publishing this blog. So I feel, the above quote pretty much sums it all up. This quote tells us, that to be successful in whatever you are doing, you must be determined to achieve it. Because if we lose the plot of the whole thing in between, and stop being consistent, you might as well lose your goal. Today, our perseverance has brought us all to this place. And I feel, with this determination, we could achieve many more.

LANKADHEESH: THE ASURA EMPEROR OF THE GOLDEN LANKA

Ravan, the epitome of evilness, the villain of the great epic, the Ramayana, the powerful king of Lanka, is considered to be the evilest villain of all times. Though his villainy is the only thing that he was reputed for, there are many things of the ‘ten-headed’ Asura king that were overshadowed by his ego and evil nature.

According to legends, Ravan was born to Sage Vishrava, the son of the Great Prajapati Pulastya, one of the ten mind-born sons of Lord Brahma, the creator himself. As his great ancestors, Ravan was also the possessor of a very fearsomely powerful intellect, and was a man with many talents. Ravan was born to Sage Vishrava, and Kaikesi, the Asura princess and daughter of the then King of Lanka, Sumali. Ravan was the second eldest son of Sage Vishrava. Sage Vishrava had six sons, namely, Kubaer (The celestial guardian of the treasury of heaven), Kumbhakarna (The brother who slept for six months at a stretch, and ate for another six months), Vibhishana (The virtuous follower of Lord Ram, who later became the reason for Ravan’s death), Khara, Dushana, and two daughters namely, Shurpanakha (The one who instigated the war), and Kumbhi.

Kubaer was crowned the King of Lanka, after Lord Vishnu defeated Sumali, the Grandfather of Lord Ravan and father of Mother Kaikesi. To avenge this humiliation at the hands of his half-brother, Ravan usurped the throne from him, and became the King himself. As a legend goes, after becoming the ruler of Lanka, Ravan, along with two of his brothers, Vibhishana, Kumbhakarna, went to Mt. Meru, and performed a severe penance to please Lord Brahma. Pleased, the Lord blessed Ravan with the boon of invincibility, from all creatures except humans. Ravan, as very few people know, was the greatest devotee of Lord Shiva. Ravan also tried to please Lord Shiva, but even after 11,000 years, the Lord did not turn up. Hence, to appease the Mahadev, Ravan severed his head, 10 times. He also tried getting an audience with the Lord, but was stopped by the Lord’s favourite, Nandi, and was cursed to meet his end at the hands of the monkey race. Unable to meet Lord Shiva, the great Lankadheesh tried to climb Mount Kailash, from the most difficult side possible. Mahadev, seeing him approaching, kicked him down the whole mountain. This infuriated Ravan to make an even greater sacrifice.

Ravan severely injured himself to obtain material to make an instrument, the Rudra Veena. Known to be a great Rudra Veena player, Ravan began to play this instrument, and began singing the praises of the great Destroyer of Evil. Pleased, Lord Shiva was forced, to appear and present Ravan, with what he desired the most; The Atmalingam, or the Power of Lord Shiva himself. The story of how Ravan lost this power, and was defeated by Lord Ram, is for another time. The instrument was called the Ravanhatta and most of the people get shocked to hear that the praises of Lord Shiva composed and sung by Dashamukhi, was none other than the powerful Shiva Tandava Stotram. This shows that a person should go to any extent to achieve what he or she desires, but if the goal is a bad one, then the efforts, however great they may be, are forgotten over a period of time.

HIGHER EDUCATION VS SKILL ACQUISITION

There’s always a war between two sides: Jedi Vs Siths… Lannisters Vs Starks… Demigods Vs demons…  In these cases, we usually know which side is going to win. However, no matter how much we wish for it, the real world does not work the way we want it to (Remember T-series Vs PewDiePie …Donald Trump Vs Hilary Clinton…India Vs China… I’m going too far, aren’t I?). When it comes to personal taste, each one of us has our own opinions on different subjects.

Now…where do we stand on this given topic?

We are all busy chasing the superficial term “success”. As always, there are two sides: higher education (a.k.a a certificate, a piece of paper that defines our intellect based on our theoretical grasp and understanding; without considering practical expertise) and skill acquisition (the dexterity that usually helps us in proceeding in day-to-day life but fails to grab opportunities along the way because we need the black and white proof of the existence of our knowledge). That sums everything up, doesn’t it? (Why should I even continue writing this blog…)

I’ve been mulling over this question myself for a long time. Let’s elaborate on both perspectives.

Higher Education refers to a certification course that Industry requirements and job placements make it compulsory for aspirants to get these certified courses to get placed in a large-scale company at a higher position. In this case, if a person wishes to specialize in a particular field, it may not necessarily be of his/her field of interest. The individuals that choose this educational path are more appreciated and valued in the industrial and the non-industrial sectors, as a degree course prepares individuals and trains them. However, the higher graded individuals are absorbed more in the industry hence many aspirants chase after the grades and the marks without properly gaining the knowledge. Of course… by “many”, I don’t mean all (to the person who’s reading this, don’t be offended, you might be stuck in the same rat race…I am).

Skill Acquisition concerns the abilities of an individual to perform given tasks efficiently without any obstacles. One can also label it as the practical knowledge or the knack to deal with a varied range of problems. This typically involves observation and executing certain actions. It also calls for trial and error method while learning. For mastering a skill, curiosity, focus and perseverance are quite important. Assuming a person has an assorted skillset, where do we go downhill? I’ll tell you.  It’s the resume that is considered before a person is called for an interview during a job application. In these circumstances, the more certified individual is called for.

So… does anyone win here? Nope.

The only option that remains, is to strike up a balance between the two i.e., to improve one’s skills as well as concentrate on the degree courses to excel in our field of interest.

HAVERTZ GOAL CROWNS CHELSEA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNERS

Chelsea were crowned Champions of Europe for the second time ever, after a Kai Havertz goal secured a tense 1-0 victory in Porto. Havertz scored the only goal of the game as the Blues denied Premier League champions City to add their name on the Ol’ Big Ears. The Blues finished fourth in the Premier League, a whopping 19 points behind their finale counterparts City, but astoundingly managed to defeat them for the third time this season.

Kai Havertz broke the deadlock near the end of the first half when he managed to get on the end of a defence splitting pass from Mason Mount & kept his cool to round Ederson & slot the ball home. Not only did the young prospect from Germany break the deadlock in the game but he added the first to his UCL goal tally.

For Thomas Tuchel, the Champions League victory means that he is at the peak of his managerial career. The German has been through lots of ups and downs in recent seasons after leaving Dortmund, suffering heartbreak in the final last year with PSG & then being sacked from Paris. Chelsea were rock bottom of the top half of the table,9th when he took over the reins from Lampard & yet managed to not only ensure champions league qualification for the club but steered the club to their second ever UCL title. He could have become only the third ever manager to lose consecutive UCL finals but he showcased tactical masterclass to see Chelsea through the final. He thoroughly managed to come out on top in the duel at the touchline, and outclassed Pep. Some say that it was Pep’s overthinking that cost City dearly as he made some skeptical changes to City’s approach. Chelsea’s defence was impenetrable as they closed down any spaces left to exploit for City and managed to shove Mahrez, Sterling, de Bruyne, Foden & Silva completely out of the equation.

While an expected goal of 0.52 for Man City in the biggest match of their history is rather underwhelming, a League trophy and cup along with a final appearance is nevertheless an impressive achievement for City, taking into account that the League victory was their third in the last 4 seasons. City still managed to exert their domination in the Premier League. However, failing to capitalize on the biggest stage where it mattered the most has seen Pep receive undue criticism. The menace & class showcased from this Chelsea side was indeed commendable and too much to handle for even the best coaches and players.
