July – Global Festival

Palio di Provenzano

Date: 2nd July

Palio di Siena

The Palio di Siena is a horse race that is held twice each year, on 2 July and 16 August, in Siena, Italy. Ten horses and riders, bareback and dressed in the appropriate colors, represent ten of the seventeen contrade, or city wards.

The Palio held on 2 July is named Palio di Provenzano, in honor of the Madonna of Provenzano, a Marian devotion particular to Siena which developed around an icon from the Terzo Camollia.

There are 17 contrade, or districts: Caterpillar, Dragon, Eagle, Forest, Giraffe, Goose, Owl, Panther, Porcupine, Ram, She-Wolf, Seashell, Snail, Tortoise, Tower, Unicorn and Wave. Each contrada features its own emblem and colors. To this end, while walking around Siena’s city center, you’ll easily differentiate which contrada you’re in thanks to flags and emblems that adorn the winding streets. The contrade give Siena’s residents a real sense of community, as its citizens work year-round for the district and its activities. Each contrada also features its own museum showcasing memorabilia and its past victories, not to mention the many churches where each horse is blessed on the day of the race!

The Palio is quite a complex event, as there are many rules that maybe only the contrade know! Not all 17 contrade participate in the race. Only 10 out of the 17 take part in each race (10 on July 2 and 10 on August 16): 7 that did not participate in the previous race will run in the next one, while the remaining three are drawn at random. This means that a contrada may be running both, one or no races at all.

The Palio prize is the so-called Drappellone, meaning large drape, or Cencio, a large painted silk canvas designed and created each year by a different artist. The winning contrada displays the canvas in its museum during district celebrations. The oldest existing Palio dates to 1719 and belongs to the Aquila contrada.

The historic center of Siena has been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. It is one of the nation's most visited tourist attractions and is famous for its cuisine, art, museums, medieval cityscape and the Palio.

ON MAN AND NATURE

In one of the episodes of the timeless British television series ‘Yes, Minister’, a civil  servant

remarks to his minister rather incisively that it is only the urban middle class that cares about the

countryside, because such people do not have to live  there. Such is the realism of this quote

that we must introspect — is our fervid  emphasis on protecting what J.R.R. Tolkien would term‘wild, untamed Nature’,  quite often characteristic of the countryside, not driven solely by

professed  affinity for Nature but also by a need to grow in moral stature in the eyes of  others?

What we deem ‘harm to Nature’ seems unalterably fated

in the pursuit of  economic progress. No moral argument could be submitted against thelatter, for  there yet dwell in the world so many who are penurious. We cannot justifiably

begrudge them the fact that securing their daily meals is their chief concern. They  would

be greatly benefited with industrial development, which would bring to  them meaningful

employment, and, in the fullness of time, prosperity enough to  ensure a degree of

economic security in the deeply competitive world of  employment.

How, then, do we mitigate the former, namely, ‘harm to Nature’? The  answer is at once

surprising and practical. We must foremost be so humble as to  realize the sheer

enormity that Nature is. She is all that is, and it may surprise  many to learn, it cannot

truly be destroyed by any of our activities, however polluting they may be. We cannot so

much as protect her. For such are the scales  on which She operates that She predated

the existence of us humans, and should ill fate befall mankind, She shall also postdate

us.We must not overstate our  prowess at repurposing Her to erect our buildings, lay our

roads and suchlike, and  its effects on Her.

We ought to change our thinking; it is not Her but our own existence that  we imperil, and

both are not synonymous. The humility of employing practical  rhetoric may yet bring with it

good tidings of scientific remedies. Besides the

important activities of tree-planting, governments may implement what  economist

Milton Friedman recommended: an ‘Effluent Tax’ on, say, cars; to  incentivize car manufacturers

to build fuel-efficient and less polluting cars. Many  an industry may be mandated.

Similar solutions may be found, but it is pragmatism and not sentiment  that must

guide us.

Braces brace us!

The metal, ceramic shield on your teeth.

Simply irritating while you eat!

At times they firmly pain,

That you've no option but to tolerate in vain!

They last for a few years.

You've to bear with them, fighting the teethy fears!

Being optimistic all the while

That, at the end, it'll leave a beautiful smile.

We're so inquisitive to acquire the bracing procedure

Thousands of questions and thoughts racing in the mind.

Hoping that it's bearable,

Little did we know,

That there were so many things to unwind.

At the end, when the dentist remarked,

You don't have to wear braces anymore.

It was music to my ears.

And I bore a smile, so pure!

CRICKET

India missing key players in 'overseas' test cricket?

India has a bunch of quality players to make up a side that is unbeatable at home- like conditions. But when it comes to 'SENA' conditions the team balance has been an issue. After the great Kapil Dev, India hasnt managed to find any seam bowling all rounder of the same caliber. Hardik Pandya showed that he could play that role for which India was struggling to find a man. But a back injury in late 2019, meant he could not bowl anymore. Though he is recovering, it is unlikely that he would be able to make a test cricket return owing to the fact that he is overly utilized in white ball cricket. India is missing fast- bowling all rounders in 'SENA' conditions. The team needs at least one such all rounder to maintain the balance. This fast bowling all rounder was missed a lot in the WTC Final. If Hardik Pandya was fit, he would have provided valuable runs with the bat at no.7 and could also reduce the stress from the fast bowlers.

India also thoroughly missed its best swing bowler, Bhuvneshwar Kumar. He is unarguably the best for India when it comes to swinging the ball. He has his career best bowling figures in England and would have proved to be lethal, with the skillsets he brings to the table. The current Indian pace trio doesn't like to swing a lot and relies mostly on seaming and angling deliveries.

One more thing India missed was batting from bowlers and bowling from batters. Yes you heard it right. The Indian tail enders need to contribute a bit more with the bat. No one is expecting centuries from them, but they should either show some resilience or play quick cameos of 20s or 30s. If the tail contributes to about 30 - 40 runs then it will help to get momentum while starting the next innings.

Also if Indian batters can help with some part-time spin it will add to the balance of the side. Just like Sachin Tendulkar and Virendra Sehwag used to give a bit of part-time spin, if present batters do that it will only aid in winning. Wickets are not expected from them, but their bowling can help in slowing down the pace of the game, bringing back momentum, etc.

If all these factors work together then India can win more series in New Zealand, England and Australia.

  1. Happy indeed I was to see my article published, but there has been an editorial foible to which I should like to draw attention. In my submission, there was a sentence, "Many an industry may so be mandated." The word 'so' has been omitted in this edition. The usage of the word 'so' intended to reflect the possibility that many an industry may 'accordingly' be mandated (namely, that they may also be required to pay the suggested 'effluent tax'). While the said omission does not adversely affect the meaning sought to be conveyed, I am ever in pursuit of semantic perfection, so great an affinity for the written word as I harbour.

I must, however, thank the editors for having changed 'inalterably' to 'unalterably'. The former, I have realized, is not commonly used, referenced in some other works though it may be, and the more commonly accepted word would not be subject to dispute.
