राज्ञि धर्मिणि धर्मिष्ठाः पापे पापाः समे समाः | लोकास्तमनुवर्तन्ते यथा राजा तथा प्रजा ||

Explanation

If a leader is dutiful, only then will his subjects be dutiful; if the king is involved in malpractices, then his subjects will follow; if the ruler practices equality, only then will his people avoid discrimination. All in all, as is the king, so is the kingdom.

Historical Significance of the Day

1497, Vasco da Gama, sets sail from Lisbon leading a fleet of four ships and nearly a crew of 170 men, which later becomes a milestone in world history, opening sea routes between Europe and Asia. Da Gama lands in Calicut on 20 May 1498.

1889, the first publication of the Wall Street Journal is out. The Wall Street Journal is one of the giants of newspapers in the United States in terms of circulation. It hasn’t stopped printing, since it started. It is mainly business oriented and is published in broadsheet format as well as online.

Chocolates and Almonds, this may seem totally out of the box while dealing with historical significance, but yes it has some connection today. Chocolates along with Almonds have been savored together quite often and are firm favorites when it comes to selecting chocolate bars. 8th July is also celebrated as Chocolates with Almonds Day. So do enjoy an Almond- Chocolate Bar today!

Beer Can Regatta

Date: 12th July

Darwin, in the far north of Australia, has one of the highest beer consumptions in the world. In 1974 the residents of the town came up with another use for their empty beer cans - the Beer Can Regatta.

Boats are made out of empty aluminum cans. Beer cans are the traditional building material, but the organizers now promote responsible drinking and a family friendly event, so all can types are allowed. The boats, if you can call them that, are raced from Mindil Beach out to a buoy and back, powered by human paddlers.

The popularity of the event has dwindled recently, at its peak in 1986 it attracted more than 20,000 spectators.

Since 1974, the Darwin Beer Can Regatta has presented a creative manner for recycling aluminum beer cans: participants craft boats from empty beer and soda cans as well as milk cartons, then take to the sea. The regatta winner receives a cash prize.
